Women’s bail pilot pairs court information with housing and health support
Eligible women awaiting trial in Belfast and Ballymena can now be offered structured support to remain safely in the community instead of being held on remand. The new bail pilot combines court information with help for housing, health, trauma, substance use and practical stability.
Depaul and Niacro will deliver the support, while the Probation Board provides court liaison so judges receive clearer information. The first phase works with women already on remand at Hydebank Wood, before extending to earlier court stages. A Northern Ireland Assembly report had highlighted the need for bail support and community alternatives.
The scheme is small, phased and unproven; courts still decide each case and public safety remains central. Its value will depend on stable housing, service capacity and transparent evaluation. For women whose needs can be managed outside prison, linking legal decisions with real support offers a fairer chance to keep families, treatment and daily life intact while a case proceeds.
