Community repair work strengthens a village’s flood preparations

Residents in Weedon Bec have another layer of flood preparation after community repair work helped put two tonnes of sandbags around the New Croft garages.

Councillors connected the village’s Flood Liaison Action Group with Northamptonshire’s Immediate Justice programme. A participant helped fill and position the bags at a site where water has flowed towards neighbouring roads and homes.

The scheme provides practical reparative work for people who commit low-level offences.

Other Northamptonshire residents can suggest repairs for areas affected by antisocial behaviour. The team asks for the issue and location, plus the activity proposed. Ideas are considered; help is not guaranteed.

Sandbags are one part of the village’s wider response. General flood guidance says they are difficult to handle and less effective than purpose-made products. This installation’s performance during flooding is still untested.

The bags are now in place, and the local action group says the work will be useful. The partnership has turned an identified community task into completed preparation.
