Children turn changing feelings into a book of their own

Children from Glencraig Integrated Primary and Holywood Primary in County Down have turned their ideas about emotions into a book they helped create. The Weather Catcher uses changing weather to explore how feelings can shift from day to day.

During Action Mental Health workshops, illustrator Ellan Rankin spent two days helping pupils connect colours, shapes and textures with emotions. She then brought their drawings together as a digital collage.

Eleven-year-old Rafferty told the BBC the project let him explore his ambition to become an author. Merryn, ten, was pleased that her cloud drawing appeared in the finished book.

The launch coincides with Love Your Library Day. Libraries NI says all 96 libraries are celebrating on 21 October, within a week of free activities.

The reporting captures creative participation and children’s pride; it does not establish a measured improvement in mental health.

Even so, the pupils now have something tangible to share: their own pictures and ideas, helping open a conversation about feelings in words and images other children can recognise.
