UK Now Has Zero Outstanding Coal Mining Applications After Welsh Council Rejection

After Carmarthenshire council in Wales rejected plans to expand an open-pit coal mine, the UK now has no outstanding proposals for new coal mining anywhere in the country.

The council turned down Bryn Bach Coal Ltd's second application to expand the Glan Lash mine near Llandybie, citing serious environmental concerns. The expansion would have threatened protected woodland, hedgerows, and irreplaceable peatland habitat.

The site is also home to the marsh fritillary, one of Britain's rarest butterfly species. Council head Rhodri Griffiths cited the unacceptable disturbance and loss of these precious habitats in the decision notice.

Coal Action Network confirmed there are now no live applications for new coal mines anywhere in the UK. They described the decision as reflecting a clear strategic commitment to climate leadership and rare habitat protection.

The UK's largest open-pit coal mine, also in Wales, has similarly been blocked from expansion. Just one underground coal mine now remains operating in Wales.
