UK climate finance reports 22 million more people supported
New UK figures published on Wednesday morning say international climate programmes have now directly helped 159 million people cope with climate change — 22 million more than last year’s cumulative estimate. The 2026 release also reports 92.7 million people gaining cleaner energy access and 201 million tonnes of greenhouse gases reduced or avoided.

The portfolio spans adaptation, energy and nature projects in developing countries. Reported clean-energy capacity rose from 4,872 to 5,940 megawatts, while combined public and private finance mobilised reached £26 billion.
These are programme estimates, not a single controlled evaluation. Independent analysis by Carbon Brief found the UK had supported roughly 500 initiatives since 2021, but said accounting changes helped the country meet its spending pledge and made some totals harder to interpret. The sensible reading is hopeful and careful: reported reach has grown sharply, and clearer project-level data would make that progress easier to trust and build on.
