Torpoint fleet returns after months of ferry maintenance

Published Last updated

The Torpoint Ferry fleet is available as three vessels again after an extended maintenance programme. The crossing links Cornwall with Plymouth and is a daily route for commuters, families, freight and emergency vehicles.

CornishStuff reports that Tamar Crossings confirmed Plym II's planned work was complete and a chain problem affecting Tamar II had been resolved. The return ends a period when the service was frequently limited to two boats.

Tamar Crossings' timetable now includes three-ferry periods at weekday peaks and on parts of Friday and Saturday. That distinction matters: having all three vessels available does not mean all three operate continuously, because off-peak and night schedules use fewer boats.

Restoring the full fleet gives operators more capacity when demand is highest and resilience when maintenance is needed. After months of disruption, the improvement is practical rather than symbolic: shorter scheduled intervals at busy times and a stronger connection across the Tamar.
