Teifi clean-up removes 37 abandoned boats from the estuary

People using the Teifi estuary at Cardigan have fewer abandoned boats to navigate around after a clean-up removed 37 vessels, alongside smaller craft and discarded items.

The Crown Estate funded the £80,000 operation, managed by Cooke & Arkwright with local partners. Afon Teifi Fairways first surveyed the boats and tried to establish their owners. After a formal notice period, specialist contractor Bluepoint Marine removed them for disposal.

That sequence matters: tracing ownership and arranging specialist removal gave partners a way to tackle boats that had accumulated over time. Deteriorating hulls can release fuel residues and plastic fragments into the river.

The work removes potential hazards, but does not establish a measured improvement in water quality. Natural Resources Wales’ wider review identifies other pressures, including nitrogen pollution in the estuary.

Even with those bigger challenges, the physical change is clear. Afon Teifi Fairways says residents and visitors have welcomed the difference: fewer derelict vessels, easier access and a tidier shared waterway.
