The Scarborough running club that helped Ellie find her feet again

When Ellie Freer returned to her Scarborough running club after heart surgery, she cried. The Christmas fancy-dress run marked an emotional return to a group she had joined in 2024.

Now 33, Ellie has completed two half-marathons and was preparing for her first Yorkshire Marathon when she spoke to the BBC. She credits running with changing her life, and singles out the people she runs alongside.

Run Scarborough says its runs are free and led by qualified England Athletics run leaders or coaches. It welcomes people working towards their first 5km as well as those taking on marathons, making encouragement part of the offer.

Ellie's account describes one person's experience. It cannot establish how much of the change came from running or the club, and her medical recovery involved surgery.

Still, her return shows the value a familiar group can hold: people to run with, shared goals and somewhere to belong after a difficult year.
