
Personalised cancer vaccine shows promise in melanoma trial

In a phase-three trial involving about 1,000 people, the vaccine was paired with Keytruda, an immunotherapy medicine already used by the NHS. The companies said the combination significantly extended the time patients remained cancer-free and reduced the risk of cancer spreading compared with Keytruda alone.
The encouraging lesson is that treatment can be built around an individual tumour rather than cancer in general. If confirmed, the same approach might help tackle other cancers; trials are already exploring lung, kidney and bladder tumours.
There is an important brake on the excitement. The announcement contained only preliminary headline findings, with no detailed figures, and the results have not yet been peer-reviewed. Researchers still need to establish safety, durability, cost and whether bespoke production can work at scale.
