OpenAI offers free frontier AI access to 10,000 researchers

OpenAI is starting a programme that will give 10,000 academic researchers free access to its frontier AI models this summer, with a goal of reaching 100,000 researchers through 2027.

ChatGPT for Academic Researchers is aimed at scientists, mathematicians and engineers at selected institutions. Participants receive access across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, including GPT-5.6 models at launch, as well as larger context windows, higher usage limits, expanded deep research, training and specialist support. Each participant can invite up to four collaborators from the same institution.

The response addresses a genuine imbalance: advanced AI tools and the computing access around them can be concentrated in wealthy companies and laboratories. OpenAI says researchers are already using these systems for tasks including hypothesis development, genomic analysis, coding, literature reviews and grant applications.

The offer could help more academic teams test whether frontier AI meaningfully accelerates discovery. However, it is not free access for every researcher. Places begin at selected institutions, applicants must meet eligibility requirements, and the programme is a staged rollout. Researchers also remain responsible for checking outputs and controlling scientific decisions.
