British Army invests £2bn in AI-powered training system

The Ministry of Defence has signed a £2 billion contract to modernise British Army training using artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and virtual environments.

The new system will train 60,000 soldiers a year over the next 15 years, using AI to replicate combat scenarios and enable troops to train anywhere at any time. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis said the investment ensures soldiers have realistic preparation for modern warfare, particularly given rapid technological changes observed in conflicts such as Ukraine.

The contract will create 270 jobs in Wiltshire and support 420 roles across the UK. A further 100 apprenticeships will be developed in partnership with Wiltshire College and the University of Staffordshire, covering disciplines from data and modelling to project management.

The MoD said the package forms part of its ambition to increase Armed Forces readiness through simulation, live systems and analytics.

Jarvis, a former Army officer, confirmed the investment at Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, where he met soldiers and viewed their latest equipment.
