Hindley’s station garden helps neighbours connect and travel
A few bulbs beside a railway platform have grown into a community project helping people feel more connected in Hindley, Wigan.
Sheila and Sandy Davidson have spent almost 20 years creating gardens at their local station. Donated plants, volunteer time and help from local businesses now sustain flower beds, trees and vegetable plots beside the tracks.
The work reaches beyond gardening. The Friends of Hindley Station work with Thrive CIC to help people with additional needs build confidence in travelling by train. Local reporting also describes support for skills and social connections, with schools and other organisations involved.

The project still depends on a small volunteer group. New lifts and a footbridge are under construction, so those access improvements are not yet complete.
Now shortlisted in the World Cup of Stations, Hindley offers a practical example of neighbours making a shared place more welcoming. For the Davidsons, even train drivers have become familiar faces, greeting them with a wave.
