Government launches action plan to support unpaid carers in England

The government has published a new action plan to improve the lives of unpaid carers in England, recognising the challenges faced by people who provide care while managing significant responsibilities.

The plan, published by the Department of Health and Social Care alongside several other departments, aims to tackle the confusion and overwhelm carers often experience when trying to access support. It focuses on three themes: ensuring people are recognised as unpaid carers by themselves and support systems; making sure carers know what help is available to make caring more manageable; and enabling carers to reach their full potential.

The action plan acknowledges that unpaid carers are a diverse group, including children, working-age adults and older people who may have their own health and care needs. The government has committed to ensuring these carers receive the support they need as they navigate a system that can add further pressure to already significant responsibilities.
