Google Maps brings local fuel prices within easier reach
Drivers across the UK can now compare nearby petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, making it easier to spot a cheaper forecourt before filling up.
The feature uses the government’s Fuel Finder data. Since February, stations have been required to report a price change within 30 minutes. Bringing those figures into a familiar mapping app puts price comparisons alongside the places people already search for.
The Competition and Markets Authority reported in August that registered retailers accounted for around 99% of UK fuel sales. Its data was already feeding services including Waze and the AA’s app.

Better information does not guarantee lower prices. The regulator found some retailers were slow to pass on falling wholesale diesel costs, and remained concerned about weak competition. The new Google Maps feature has no measured savings result yet.
What changes immediately is visibility: a lower-priced station can stand out when drivers compare local options. That gives households another practical way to keep an essential journey’s costs down.
