Glasgow workers win stronger pay protections before a crucial vote

Glasgow council workers facing changes to their wages have secured more breathing space before deciding whether to accept a new pay scheme.

Following negotiations involving the council, unions and Scottish government, proposed pay protection for staff facing losses has increased to three years. UNISON says the council has also agreed not to issue dismissal and re-engagement notices during its membership ballot.

The proposed scheme aims to replace discriminatory pay arrangements. LocalGov reports that GMB and Unite have agreed to put proposals to members, while the council says no further government money will be available.

UNISON has not accepted the package. Some workers still face significant losses, others await overdue increases, and some jobs have yet to be evaluated. Talks continue over allowances, lower-paid staff and those unresolved assessments.

That leaves difficult decisions ahead. But workers now have a clearer route to make them: more protection on the table, further negotiations, and a vote without the immediate threat of dismissal hanging over it.
