Flourish in Nature helps more adults join conservation work

For a volunteer from Sway, joining Flourish in Nature means exploring another part of the New Forest, getting exercise and helping nature thrive. Their account appears in new reporting on the project’s third anniversary.

Since October 2023, the community interest company has helped adults with additional support needs take part in existing conservation opportunities. Activities include planting hedges, restoring heathland and litter picking.

The practical difference is support that travels with the group. A welfare van provides a toilet, warmth and hot drinks, with solar power funded by the New Forest Trust. It can also provide lifts where needed.

The National Park Authority’s 2025–26 annual review records more than 70 volunteer placements through the partnership. Those placements are not a count of unique people, and neither report measures long-term health improvements.

But the regular sessions offer something tangible: a supported way to contribute alongside other volunteers. As the Sway participant describes it, people can enjoy the Forest while helping to care for it.
