English Inventor's Laundry Filter Captures Tons of Microplastics Before They Reach Our Waters

An English inventor has created a breakthrough device that's already making a measurable dent in microplastic pollution — one of the world's most pervasive environmental threats.

Adam Root has partnered with home appliance giants Bosch and Siemens to produce a laundry machine filter that captures artificial microfibers before they enter the sewage system. Every load of washing typically sheds about 1 gram of tiny plastic threads from synthetic clothing, which eventually reach rivers and oceans.

Since launching in June 2026, Root's company Matter Industries has shipped enough home devices to capture 4.6 tons of microfibers over their operational lives. The food-processor-sized unit hooks directly onto home washing machines and sells for around £250.

But Root isn't stopping at households. He's targeting textile factories, where a single plant can release 360 metric tons of microfibers annually during manufacturing. He's also campaigning to install filters at UK wastewater treatment plants.

"The most common thing we hear is: 'I cannot believe how much material is coming out of the washing machine,'" Root told the Guardian. Matter Industries raised £20 million and was an Earthshot Prize finalist in 2025.
