Devon emergency fund supports households facing sudden costs

Low-income households across Devon can seek emergency help with food, energy, housing and other essential costs through a fund introduced earlier this year. A sudden illness, redundancy or unavoidable bill can push a household into crisis before longer-term support is arranged. Rural residents may face additional fuel costs and difficulty reaching advice services. The government-funded Crisis and Resilience Fund replaced the Household Support Fund in April.

Devon’s district and city councils distribute assistance locally, while Citizens Advice Devon provides guidance. Support can cover unexpected essential expenses, heating oil and immediate living costs, alongside advice intended to strengthen longer-term finances. Applicants do not necessarily need to receive benefits, and an award will not reduce their existing benefit entitlement.

The practical value is a route for helping people at the point of financial shock while connecting them with wider advice. However, the council has not published the fund’s Devon allocation, the number helped or award sizes, so its reach cannot yet be assessed. Local councils and Citizens Advice Devon will continue processing enquiries and applications as evidence of demand and delivery develops.
