Six million households in line for £150 energy discount

Six million British households are expected to receive a £150 winter energy discount.

The scheme was expanded last year so every household whose billpayer receives qualifying means-tested benefits can be eligible. The government says nearly one million additional families with children benefited last winter, while around 250,000 Scottish households are expected to receive the payment automatically for the first time this year.

There is one important action to take. Eligible people must make sure their name is on the electricity account by 23 August, because suppliers will use customer records from that date. This may particularly affect people who recently moved or use prepayment meters with a key or card.

In England and Wales, qualifying benefits include Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit and income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

The £150 rebate will not remove fuel poverty or compensate for every rise in household costs. But making support automatic for a broader group reduces paperwork and the risk that eligible families miss out. Checking the account name now could protect a meaningful saving before colder weather arrives.
