A birthday cuppa brings Buckie together in memory of a lifeboat volunteer
Sue Cameron had been dreading her son’s birthday. James Porter, who died aged 37 earlier this year, had spent more than 21 years volunteering with Skegness lifeboat crew.
On 28 September, Sue invited friends, family and neighbours to her home in Buckie, Moray, for tea and birthday cake. Local lifeboat volunteers joined them. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) reported on 5 October that the gathering had raised more than £800, including cash and online donations.

On her fundraising page, Sue described how preparing for the day gave her something to focus on as she faced James’s first birthday without him.
The charity explains that donations help pay for crew training, equipment and lifeboat facilities. It has not linked this fundraiser’s proceeds to a particular purchase, so its immediate result is the money raised and the support Sue describes.
By gathering around a kettle, her community helped her remember James while supporting the rescue service he had given so much of his life to.
