A £1 billion housing plan aims to connect local needs with long-term investment
More people could find an affordable home through a £1 billion UK housing plan from German investment manager PATRIZIA. The ambition is to support up to 4,000 homes, with mayors and local partners helping identify where investment is needed.
The government welcomed the announcement after a UK-Germany growth forum in Berlin. PATRIZIA says it will raise and deploy the money through relationships with institutional investors, potentially including UK pension funds. Those funds would make their own investment decisions.
This is a commitment to develop projects, with locations and delivery dates still to come. It is not 4,000 homes already built.
There is experience to build on. PATRIZIA reports that its impact strategy has delivered 929 homes to housing associations in Ireland. In London's Elephant and Castle, its Walworth Corners development has secured construction finance and appointed a contractor.
The useful idea is straightforward: match local knowledge of housing needs with investors able to take a longer view. Turning that partnership into homes would give more people somewhere secure to live.
