Barnsley pairs AI training with paid work placements

Barnsley residents will receive six months of AI training linked to paid work placements under two schemes preparing for delivery.

As workplace technology changes, jobseekers can face a skills gap while entry routes into digital roles remain concentrated in particular places.

The £400,000-plus AI Career Launchpad, developed with Barnsley College, will combine training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship with employer placements. A second pilot, Getting Job Ready with AI, will begin in September through Jobcentre Plus and help people use digital tools to find suitable roles, improve applications and prepare for interviews. An earlier local course has already produced a practical example: one participant built an HR system that her employer says reduced administrative work.

Paid experience and a curriculum intended for reuse elsewhere make the model more substantial than a short introductory class. However, the new schemes have not yet reported enrolment, completion or employment results, and responsible use still requires human judgement.

Delivery starts next month. After completion, the Launchpad curriculum is expected to be released freely for other colleges and training providers to adapt.
