AI can give us more time to be human
Humanity faces poverty, health and climate change challenges. Gilbert would also like to explore the galaxy.
Perhaps AI could help us solve these faster, and leave more time for being human?
1. Response
AI can analyse information, identify patterns and complete routine tasks. Climate TRACE combines AI and satellites to track emissions from millions of sources. NHS teams are testing AI-generated clinical notes, while affordable agents can help solo entrepreneurs with research and administration.
2. Evidence
One NHS pilot reduced documentation to under four minutes per patient and returned tens of thousands of hours to teams. I use AI to research Good News Gilbert, build tools and analyse my spending.
3. Insight
AI works best as a capable assistant. It can remove friction, but people must provide the goals, values and final judgment. The reward could be more time for friends, family, hobbies and meaningful work.
4. Limitations
AI can be confidently wrong. It consumes energy and may increase cybercrime, threaten jobs or widen inequality. Learning to direct and check it may be safer than blindly trusting it—or avoiding it altogether.
