A Weymouth homeowner shares the changes behind lower energy bills
Alan Muncaster says his Weymouth bungalow has broken even on energy bills this year, with payments for exported solar electricity offsetting what he spends.
He is sharing the experience through Dorset Greener Homes, which opens more than 50 properties to visitors across two October weekends. The idea is to let people ask householders what worked, what it cost and what they would change.
His home combines insulation, solar panels, batteries and a heat pump. The project’s detailed account explains the less visible work too: insulating beneath suspended floors and improving ventilation to address a damp, poorly insulated bungalow.

The bill result is his own report, not an independently audited comparison. It followed years of investment, and the same equipment will not suit every home or budget.
But visitors can explore individual improvements as well as a complete retrofit. With the bungalow also open by appointment throughout the year, neighbours can learn from changes already made before deciding what might help their own homes.
