
UK backs faster charging technology for electric aircraft
Electric aircraft promise quieter, lower-emission journeys, but slow charging could leave them sitting on the ground for too long to be practical. A new UK-backed programme will tackle that bottleneck directly.
Vertical Aerospace will lead the £3.4 million ECLiPSE project with the University of Bath and engineering consultancy InnCat. Up to £1.75 million will come from government funding, as part of a wider £43 million package for next-generation aviation technology.
The team will develop high-power charging and liquid-cooling systems. Better thermal management could allow batteries to charge faster without overheating, while smaller, simpler equipment may be easier and cheaper to install at airports and vertiports.
The work could also benefit electric lorries and ships, which face similar charging challenges. However, this remains a development programme rather than proof that electric aviation is commercially ready. Its value will depend on whether the technology can deliver safe, affordable and genuinely faster turnarounds in real operations.
