Tom’s litter rounds help keep Annahilt’s roads cleaner

On the four roads into Annahilt in County Down, Tom McGrory has become a familiar sight in high-visibility clothing, collecting rubbish. Local reporting credits his rounds with removing more than 1,000 bin-loads in less than a year.

Council support helps turn one resident’s effort into a regular service. Tom says Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council supplies bags and collects the rubbish he gathers. Neighbours told the reporter they regularly see him at work.

The council also offers litter-picking equipment to residents through its Waste Management Team, giving other volunteers a practical starting point.

The reported collection total is not an independently audited measure, and cleaning up has not stopped fresh litter appearing. Tom still finds drinks containers, vapes and takeaway packaging discarded along the roads.

Now part of the Annahilt and Magheraconluce Community Association, he says the work gives him purpose. Each collection removes rubbish from shared surroundings and gives neighbours a visible example of someone caring for their village.
