Three Critically-Endangered Sumatran Tigerr Cubs Born at UK Zoo

Three Sumatran tiger cubs have taken their first wobbly steps outside at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Canterbury, Kent — a precious victory for one of the world's rarest big cats.

With fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild forests of Indonesia, the birth of these cubs — two girls and one boy — represents vital progress for the species' survival.

First-time mum Tipah gave birth on 9 April, and has since been spotted keeping a watchful eye from a platform while her energetic cubs explore, play, and develop their own personalities.

Head of Carnivores Richard Langston praised Tipah's calm, patient approach to motherhood as the cubs grow bolder each day.

The Sumatran tiger is listed as Critically Endangered, making captive breeding programmes like this one essential lifelines for species conservation — efforts that have successfully saved other animals from extinction in the past.
