Thousands rally in Belfast to declare 'refugees are welcome here'

Thousands of people gathered at Belfast City Hall on Saturday for a powerful anti-racism demonstration, sending a clear message of solidarity after this week's violence.

The Together Against Hate rally brought together political parties, trade unions, and ordinary residents who filled the streets chanting 'Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here.'

Speakers praised the hundreds of volunteers who evacuated families, provided meals, and reassured frightened communities during the disorder. Healthcare workers, firefighters, bus drivers and teachers were recognised for supporting those affected.

Mohamed Eltayeb, who has lived in Belfast for nearly 20 years, said the overwhelming support from politicians, trade unions and local people made him feel relaxed and safe. Manal Mahdi said she arrived scared but left feeling appreciated by an immense crowd.

Raied Al-Wazzan from the Belfast Islamic Centre said that while he'd experienced hatred in the streets recently, on Saturday he 'saw a lot of love'. A similar rally took place in Londonderry.
