Solar and battery system installed at Suffolk community centre

A village community centre now has rooftop solar panels and battery storage designed to cut its bills and provide emergency power during outages. Community buildings can struggle with energy costs while trying to keep affordable spaces open for local groups.

Whepstead Community Centre in Suffolk used two council funding schemes to tackle both its running costs and carbon footprint. West Suffolk Council designed, funded and installed an 8kW solar system through its Solar for Business scheme. The centre receives all electricity generated at a tariff below its existing supplier’s price. A separate Decarbonisation Initiatives Fund award added battery storage with an emergency supply. The council estimates the combined measures will save around £500 and 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

The useful lesson is that combining generation, storage and discounted pricing can make decarbonisation practical for small community venues.

Those savings are projections, however, and have not yet been independently measured over a full year. The council will continue supporting the centre as it manages the system, allowing actual bills and electricity generation to test the estimates.
