Shropshire children reach dental assessment sooner after referral rethink
Children needing surgery for teeth trapped beneath the gum are reaching assessment sooner at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. The trust reports waiting-time reductions of 69% to 88% between referral and assessment, with more than 200 young patients benefiting.
Its orthodontic and oral surgery teams examined referral data, identified risks and matched patients to more suitable assessment routes. The redesigned process also shortened the wait between assessment and surgery, although the trust has not published that reduction.

The treatment concerns impacted upper canine teeth. NHS patient guidance explains that these can damage neighbouring roots. Surgery can uncover the tooth and attach a small chain, allowing braces to draw it into position; further orthodontic treatment often takes months.
The trust’s report gives no starting waiting times or detailed comparison period, so the figures do not show how many weeks each child saved.
Still, a clearer route between two hospital teams is helping children reach an important stage of dental care sooner.
