All 44 foundations completed at Scotland’s Sanquhar II wind farm

A Scottish wind farm designed to supply more homegrown electricity has reached a substantial milestone: all 44 turbine foundations are complete.

Jones Bros says the concrete bases at Sanquhar II, spanning Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, were delivered on time and on budget. The achievement moves the project closer to generating electricity, although completing foundations is different from having an operating wind farm.

Developer CWP Energy puts the scheme's planned capacity at 308 megawatts and estimates annual generation equivalent to the needs of more than 335,000 homes. That is a projected electricity comparison, rather than households already receiving power.

There is a useful lesson in how the building work was organised. Jones Bros used two concrete batching plants on site for the first foundation pour, reducing vehicle movements and helping coordinate deliveries. Its team included apprentices and trainees.

The development also includes energy storage intended to help grid stability. There is more work ahead, but the finished foundations are tangible progress towards a larger supply of electricity generated in Scotland.
