Philippines expands free school meals to its youngest pupils

The Philippines has expanded its school meals programme so every kindergarten and Grade 1 pupil can receive free, nutritious food during the school year.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr launched the nationwide expansion for the 2026–27 school year, which runs until 8 April 2027. It will also continue supporting undernourished children from Grades 2 to 6. The government has committed around 26 billion pesos (£1.1 billion) to provide meals for at least 180 school days.

The programme responds to a serious challenge: around one in four Filipino children under five experience stunted growth. Reliable meals can support children’s physical development while helping them concentrate, attend school regularly and participate more fully in lessons.

The expansion comes as global hunger is moving in the right direction, but remains far too widespread. According to the latest United Nations food security report, an estimated 645 million people faced hunger in 2025—14 million fewer than in 2024 and 43 million fewer than in 2022.

That progress matters, but programmes like this show the work still required. Ensuring children receive nutritious meals can turn improving global statistics into healthier lives and better futures.
