Patience helps a rescued spaniel settle into a Lichfield home

When Sprite first arrived at her new home in Lichfield, she hid behind bushes for hours. Her owners responded with patience, space and a way to retreat when she felt overwhelmed.

The springer spaniel was among 84 dogs rescued by the RSPCA from a Doncaster property. Adopter Sue Kairies told the BBC about the slow work of helping her feel safe.

A cat flap gave Sprite the choice to move away from visitors. That sense of control echoes Dogs Trust’s settling-in guidance: provide a quiet den, let a dog approach at its own pace and avoid forcing interaction.

AI Gilbert gives a generic dog space to rest in its own quiet den; illustrative scene, not Sprite.

Recovery has taken months, and this is one family’s experience rather than evidence that every dog will respond in the same way. Dogs Trust also advises seeking behavioural support when needed.

Sue now says Sprite enjoys the garden, park and dog field, with two cats for company. Giving her time and choice has helped turn a frightening new place into somewhere she can explore.
