Over 50,000 ticket buyers to receive refunds from StubHub UK

More than 50,000 people who bought tickets through StubHub UK will automatically receive refunds after the company was ordered to repay customers over illegal pricing practices.

The Competition and Markets Authority found that between April and December last year, some customers purchasing tickets for concerts and sports events were shown prices that excluded mandatory service and delivery fees. Those unavoidable charges only appeared at the final checkout stage, breaching consumer protection law.

The regulator has ordered StubHub UK to repay over £590,000 to affected fans, with each customer receiving around £10 per transaction on average. The company also faces a fine of nearly £900,000.

Customers do not need to take any action. StubHub UK will contact affected buyers directly, and refunds will be automatically credited to the card used for the original purchase.

The company, which blamed an isolated platform error, said it had identified and corrected the issue promptly. The CMA confirmed StubHub UK admitted breaking the law and has taken steps to end the conduct, receiving a 40% reduction to its financial penalty as a result.

The action forms part of the regulator's wider crackdown on drip pricing, a practice banned last year.
