New Mexico privacy ruling orders Meta to pay $25 billion, report says

A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay $25 billion following findings that Facebook misled users about who could see their personal data, according to the supplied newsletter.

The account says the case concerns conduct between 2010 and 2021 and grew out of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It reports that jurors found nearly 44 million violations of state consumer-protection law and that the judge reduced a larger potential penalty.

The newsletter says proceeds would go towards education under the state constitution. Meta is reported to be appealing. An order and an eventual payment are different stages: the amount, appeal status and destination of any recovered funds need to be checked against the court record.
