Isle of Wight festival swaps headliners for beach cleans and nature walks

A refreshing alternative to the commercial festival circuit is blooming on the Isle of Wight. Instead of big-name acts and eye-watering ticket prices, the Biosphere Festival offers something different: over 100 community-led events celebrating the island's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.

Running from 27 June to 5 July, the nine-day festival spreads across beaches, libraries, woodlands and village spaces. Events include guided walks, ocean yoga, wildlife talks, craft workshops, beach cleans and wild fermentation sessions. Most are free or low-cost, making it genuinely accessible.

"It's great for people who are more about learning and being inspired," said festival producer Martha Henson. "People who prefer smaller scale events where a big festival can be overwhelming."

Now in its third year, the festival celebrates the island's unique relationship between people, wildlife and landscape. It's run largely by volunteers, with this year's £20,000 National Lottery grant allowing organisers to hire a small team.

One visitor called it "nourishment for the soul" – a description that captures the spirit of this gentle, grassroots celebration of community action and nature recovery.
