
India’s first private orbital rocket reaches space
Indian startup Skyroot Aerospace has sent the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket into orbit—a milestone for India’s commercial space sector.
The 22-metre Vikram-1 launched from Sriharikota on 18 July, placing six customer payloads and experiments into orbit around 15 minutes later.
Like SpaceX in America, Skyroot shows how private companies can work alongside a national space agency and expand launch capacity. Its vision is to make launching satellites as easy as booking a cab.
Easier, cheaper access to orbit could support communications, weather forecasting, navigation, farming and disaster response—giving India greater control over satellite infrastructure. The industry can also create skilled jobs and technologies, although space investment does not reduce poverty automatically.
Each successful launch adds knowledge that could eventually support humanity’s larger ambitions, including living beyond Earth. Vikram-1 is not a Mars rocket, but technological progress is cumulative.
There are limits: this was a maiden flight and more testing is needed before routine launches. Gilbert supports useful exploration, but not unnecessary orbital debris; wider access to space must come with responsible payloads and credible end-of-life plans.
