Global renewable electricity generation rose 9.8% in a year

Renewable electricity generation grew by 9.8% in 2024, according to new statistics reported from the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The world generated 9,836 terawatt hours of renewable electricity during the year, giving clean sources a 31.7% share of total generation. Non-renewable generation grew much more slowly, by 1.4%.

Solar and wind drove much of the progress. Asia produced 4,589 terawatt hours from renewables, up 14.3%, making it the strongest-growing region in the data. The figures show that clean power is not only adding capacity but delivering an increasing amount of actual electricity.

That distinction matters. New solar panels and wind turbines help only when grids, storage and market systems allow their output to reach people reliably.

The results offer solid evidence that the energy transition is advancing at scale. Yet renewables still supplied less than one-third of global electricity in 2024, and demand continues to rise. Faster growth must therefore be matched by grids, storage and policies that reduce fossil-fuel dependence rather than simply adding clean generation alongside it.
