Eling Volunteers Turn Fly-Tipped Lane Into Thriving Community Garden

Volunteers in Eling, near Southampton, have transformed a neglected lane filled with fly-tipped rubbish into a vibrant community green space.

The area had become a dumping ground for broken glass, discarded furniture and waste, making it unsafe for children and dog walkers. Local residents Izzy and Robyn formed Common Earth Collective to tackle the problem.

With no external funding, the group relied entirely on donations of time, tools and materials from local businesses and residents. What was once an eyesore is now planted with fruit, vegetables, wildflowers and insect habitats.

Children from Eling Infant School joined in by painting bug hotels, adding to the transformation.

"The biggest achievement has been seeing the community come together to create something positive," said Robyn. "Neighbours are no longer strangers, and everyone chipped in, even when it was tough."

Common Earth Collective say this is just the beginning of their work to improve local green spaces and bring residents together.
