Six teenagers gain construction credentials by improving a Cwmparc gym
Six teenagers who have experienced care have gained construction qualifications while giving a community gym in Cwmparc, south Wales, a fresh start.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council says the 16-to-18-year-olds fitted plasterboard, painted walls and practised using tools safely during a week with specialist trainer Realskillz ARC. The project joined practical experience with preparation for construction work, rather than leaving learning in a classroom.
The council’s Care to Work team organised the course with support from the University of South Wales’ Reaching Wider programme. All six secured qualifications and CSCS cards, according to the council.
Those cards can matter at the site gate. CSCS explains that many contractors and site managers require a card appropriate to a worker’s role, showing they have the relevant training and qualifications.
A card is not a job offer, and the council has not reported employment outcomes for this group. But the teenagers leave with something tangible to build on: recognised credentials, hands-on experience and a useful improvement to a shared local space.
