Could closer ties with Europe open new doors for Britain?
Could Britain rejoin the European Union? The possibility is back in the political conversation, as the government considers how closer cooperation could improve trade and strengthen security.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the options include a customs union, participation in the single market, or going “all the way” back into the EU, according to Euronews. He says the government needs to weigh what is achievable and the advantages and disadvantages.
Those choices involve different commitments. A customs union proposal, for example, aims to remove trade barriers without restoring full membership.

There is now a concrete next step: EU leaders have confirmed a summit with Burnham in Brussels on 20 November. Discussions will cover energy, food and farming rules, security and links between people, alongside other shared priorities.
The summit announcement is about strengthening the partnership; it does not announce an agreement to rejoin.
For now, the hopeful development is a scheduled opportunity to turn closer relations into practical cooperation. Any benefits will depend on what both sides actually agree and deliver.
