Community physiotherapy days bring care closer in Northern Ireland
People with muscle and joint problems in Northern Ireland are getting physiotherapy and community support under one roof, helping them avoid repeated appointments and journeys.
The South Eastern Trust says its ten Community Appointment Days have reached around 1,500 people. About 55% have not needed another individual outpatient appointment after receiving advice, treatment or help from community services.
At the first Downpatrick event, patients could meet physiotherapists alongside counselling, nutrition, carers’ support and other teams. Staff can introduce someone directly to a service, removing the extra step of arranging contact later.

The trust reports average outpatient waits falling from roughly 18 months to ten. These are its own service figures, and do not establish that appointment days alone caused the reduction. A separate UK randomised study across 20 locations will test the model’s health benefits and costs.
For Downpatrick patient David Campbell, the immediate value was simpler: a relaxed setting where he could find the right support in one visit.
