Circus performers aged 50 to 96 are rewriting the rules of ageing
This weekend, an over-50s circus showcase in Hertfordshire is challenging the idea that play and performance belong only to the young.
Generation Circus brings together performers aged 50 to 96, learning trapeze, hula hoop, juggling and dance at free weekly workshops funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.
Carol, who performs trapeze and hoop, said circus gave her a way to reconnect after her daughter's death four years ago. "It's given me a purpose and brought a little bit of sparkle back into my life," she said.
Bob, a clown and dancer, discovered something unexpected: "I thought I wasn't a performer all my life. Circus has made me think about who I am. And it turns out I AM a performer."
Emma Taylor, who founded Generation Circus with her daughter Maisy, said: "There's something radical about seeing people reclaim play, performance and visibility later in life."
Last year's show drew sell-out audiences of 500. This year's performance, titled 'A Rebellion Against Ageism', takes place on Sunday 14 June at Ware Drill Hall.
