Britain's first Catholic PM makes ending rough sleeping his opening priority

Andy Burnham, Britain's first lifelong Roman Catholic prime minister, has made ending rough sleeping his first pledge in office.

Hours before arriving in Downing Street on Monday, Burnham visited The Passage, a Catholic-founded homelessness charity in Westminster. He later announced that tackling rough sleeping would be his opening priority as prime minister.

Burnham's faith is shaped by a British Catholic tradition focused on social action rather than culture-war politics. As mayor of Greater Manchester in 2023, he travelled to Rome and presented Pope Francis with a signed Manchester United shirt. After the pontiff's death in 2025, Burnham praised his dedication to "equality and compassion for humanity".

Hannah Rich, director of Christians on the Left, a Labour affiliate, noted that British Christianity operates differently from its American counterpart. "The British church is not the American church," she said, explaining that divisive culture-war issues are not a unifying political force in the UK in the same way.

The new prime minister's first symbolic act signals a focus on practical compassion over ideological conflict.
