Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader and will take over as Prime Minister on Monday

Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the new leader of the Labour Party and will become British Prime Minister on Monday.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester won overwhelming support from MPs, trade unions and party branches, making him the only choice to take over from Keir Starmer. He was declared leader at a special party conference at TUC headquarters in London on Friday.

In his address, Burnham said the country was "crying out for a new politics" and pledged to "work relentlessly to build a culture of one Labour team". He warned that it was Labour's "last chance to change" and said the party must do so together as a united movement.

Burnham paid tribute to Starmer, saying he had led Labour "from our worst defeat to one of the best victories in history". But he also sought to draw a line under the past, asking whether Labour had "been good enough" and pledging to "do better".

The announcement marks a significant moment in British politics as the party prepares for new leadership.
